In this time of need, the Guyanese from St. Vincent are refusing evacuation from the now Guyana Government. More than 4000 Guyanese are thought to be living in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, according to reports.
The island of St. Vincent is reeling from the effects of the erupting La Soufrière volcano, Guyana’s President’s Office has announced that “Irfaan Ali will be leading Guyana’s humanitarian response; to the tragedy.”
“Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo has been in proper touch with Guyana’s Honorary Consul in the country, and there has been no request for evacuation,” the Office of the President, Irfaan Ali, said in a statement on Saturday.
“We’ve been given reason to believe that the Guyanese there are well cared for”. The President is singled out in the declaration as having made no requests for movement or anything else.
As a result of the volcanic ash blanketing many towns and destroying houses, more than 20,000 people have been evacuated from areas around the volcano.
