Attorney General Anil Nandlall Thanked U.S. Ambassador Sarah Ann Lynch For Her Role In March 2nd Election Amidst Election Petition Submission

The U.S. Ambassador Sarah Lynch met with the Attorney General, Minister of Legal Affairs, and the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance Hon. Gail Texiera on October 7, 2020, at the Attorney General’s Chambers and Ministry of Legal Affairs office. 

Anil Nandlall expressed his gratitude to Sarah Lynch for her active involvement in Guyana’s election in ensuring that the results were not derailed. 

“The Attorney General began the meeting by thanking the Ambassador for her, the United States of America (USA) Embassy and the USA Government’s critical role in ensuring that the March 2, 2020, results were not derailed, in ensuring that democracy prevailed and that the will of the electorate was respected,” said the statement.

Ambassador Lynch congratulated the Attorney and the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs on their new role and expressed her admiration for the rule of law. They further ensured that the process was completed in a swift and timely manner. 

“The U.S. Ambassador congratulated Minister Nandlall and Minister Teixeira on their appointments and expressed her admiration for the legal team that defended the rule of law, constitutionality, and democracy during the multiplicity of proceedings that were filed before the declaration of the March 2, 2020, elections and the swift and able manner in which the cases were prepared, filed and presented,” according to the statement.

The Attorney also used the opportunity to update the Ambassador on the Government of Guyana’s achievements over the first 100 days in office. Nandlall made mention of the thriving economy and the Government’s intention for injecting billions of dollars into various grants, human services outreaches in combating COVID-19. 

The U.S. Ambassador thanked the Government for signing off on the Ship Rider’s Agreement, which still leaves many unanswered questions about the agreement’s context and extent. Sarah Lynch reiterated the U.S. collaborative efforts on security, security training and enhancement, human services, legislative reforms, and strengthening Guyana’s institutional democracy in ensuring the reoccurrence of the March 2nd fraudulent elections. The opposition has filed an election petition, but no mention of that was discussed.
