Chief Justice Grants Guyanese-American Petition To The Bar

Dwayne Braithwaite, on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, was admitted to the Bar in Guyana. The petition was presented by Attorney Ronald Burch-Smith in association with Mr. Keoma Griffith before the Hon. Chief Justice Roxanne George-Wilstshire. 

Guyanese born Braithwaite is an American Attorney at Law and who was admitted to the state bar of Georgia in 2013 after completing his Juris Doctorate Degree with honors (Cum laude) from the Southern University Law Center (SULC) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. 

In 2013, Mr. Braithwaite made history at SULC when he became the first of two students in the institution’s 53-year history to complete his certification in Public Interest Law together with his Juris Doctorate Degree. In addition to his academic achievements, Mr. Braithwaite also holds degrees in communications, international relations, and political science. 

Prior to becoming an attorney, Braithwaite worked as a paralegal at the Fisher and Phillip in Atlanta, one of the leading employment law firms in the US. He also served as the Senior Editor of SULC’s Law Journal of Race, Gender, and Poverty. He is the Principal Attorney for The Braithwaite Law Group in Atlanta since 2014. 

Braithwaite completed his Legal Education Certificate (LEC) at the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago this summer. 

Today, Guyanapress reached out to Mr. Braithwaite who expressed gratitude for the honor of being recognized and rewarded for an aspiration he had fought long and hard for.

“It is something that I’ve always wanted to get done ever since I graduated from law school in the United States but over the years due to the nature of the profession I did not have the time to get that done but I am elated today and it’s just another one of my goals being accomplished,” Braithwaite said. 

In his remarks to the court, Braithwaite indicated that as an attorney “We are guardians of justice and the pillar that cements leadership and the rule of law within our society, I have realized the magnitude the profession has in moulding and creating justice for all. We are catalysts and architects for ensuring those that are vulnerable in our society are not systematically denied legitimate expression…I will continue with the same level of professionalism and vigor as I bring my practice to Guyana.”

Mr. Braithwaite is currently setting up his office in Guyana.
