From Squatters To Refugees

According to a press release from the Department of Public Information website, the Civil Defence Commission will use Graham’s Hall Primary School to shelter displaced Success squatters.

The Civil Defence Commission prepared refugee camp beds at the school to house the squatters on October 18, 2020. The PPP regime displaced the squatters by flooding the squatting area previously used by GUYSUCO for sugar production.

This situation is likely to pose serious health issues, especially when facing a global pandemic. Despite this concern, there was no mention of COVID-19 prevention measures to protect persons who would be transferred to this location.

Individuals in need can call the following numbers 226-1114, 623-1700, and 600-7500 or visit the Graham’s Hall Primary School at Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara.
