Guyana Airport To Be Reopen October 12…COVID-19 Cases On The Rise

Amidst the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Guyana’s government is looking to reopen the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) on October 12, 2020.

According to the Public Works Minister, Juan Edghill, “the Cabinet had decided to reopen the country’s airports and will form part of the new changes expected to be published in the official gazette this week.”

The new Coronavirus (COVID-19) guidelines are expected to be released today, and as a result, the minister noted that the airport would be opened with several changes in mind including the testing of all persons entering Guyana. However, no measures were mentioned for the quarantining of those who tested positive for the virus.

This reopening will effectively allow select flights for the repatriation program of Guyanese living overseas. And while the Coronavirus continues to spread in Guyana at a quickening rate, the Minister of Health does not seem to have a detailed plan to help stop the spread.

In accordance with the gazetted order, the curfew will now be from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. along with special provisions for Region one, seven, and nine.
