Guyana and Taiwan Fiasco Occurred Because Nandlall Does Everthing Except His Job As Attorney General

Guyana’s Attorney General’s (AG) main job and portfolio is to ensure that proper legal services are provided to the Government of Guyana, as well as statutory services to the public. The Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs is the head of the chambers. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Legal affairs handles administrative responsibilities for the departments within the Ministry and is the Accounting Officer. The Advice and Litigation Division and the Drafting Division of the Attorney General’s Chambers are headed by the Attorney General and Chief Parliamentary Counsel respectively.

However, Guyana’s Attorney General Anil Nandlall can be seen debating the budget with the opposition as well as outreach to the various communities and having discussions on everything except his portfolio. Nandlall can be seen in every daily news headline making promises to Guyanese nationwide and many argue that his post as AG and official duties are unattended.

One such argument can be seen in the infamous China/Taiwan conflict with Guyana, where Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Wang Wenbin forced the government authorities to “take effective measures and correct the mistake” and reverse agreements made with Taiwan to have an embassy operational in Guyana.
