Is The U.S. Ambassador, Sarah-Ann Lynch, Meddling In Guyana’s Politics?

There have been many sittings of the U.S. Ambassador to Guyana, Sarah-Ann Lynch since the current administration took office. During the March 2, 2020 elections the Ambassador was called for her involvement in favoring the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C). The international community was involved in Guyana’s elections as observers and created a situation by calling on the now opposition party APNU/AFC to accept defeat before the results’ declaration. 

Today, after the current administration’s swearing-in, we have seen Ambassador Lynch’s involvement at every government level. The Ambassador is actively making courtesy calls to mostly or even all of the government ministries. 

Notably, we have seen the Ambassador visiting the Office of the First Lady, Arya Ali, the Minister of Home Affairs, Robesin Benn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hugh Todd, Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General, Anil Nandlall, President, Irfaan Ali, Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Vindhya Persaud, Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand and amongst many others. 

The main question is the purpose of the Ambassador’s visits, and how it will help Guyana. Sarah-Ann Lynch continues to pledge her support to Guyana’s development even though she is not welcome by approximately half of the country’s population. By far, Lynch can be placed into the category of the most unpopular U.S. Ambassador to Guyana. But isn’t it unusual to see a U.S. ambassador so involved in one’s country?

In May 2020, U.S. Congressman Hakeem Jeffries condemned the U.S. Government’s actions for meddling in the Guyana elections. 

“Traditionally, we can monitor how democracy is playing itself out in different parts of the world, but to interfere in such an extraordinary way and an in manner which favours one party, the opposition party, potentially to the detriment of the ruling party, is deeply troubling to a lot of us in Washington, DC,” said Hakeem Jeffries.

Is the United States in a position to tell any other country what to do? Time and time again, we have seen the blatant disrespect displayed by President Donald Trump for not representing the United States constitution through his undemocratic actions. Countries like the U.S. should always lead by example, but it is evident that the corruption currently taking hold of the United States government is being channeled to Guyana through the current Ambassador. 

About half of the population is not happy with the Ambassador meddling and many other dignitaries to Guyana. They all indicated that they wanted to see democracy prevail in Guyana by forcing a government to represent all races in Guyana. 

Only time will tell us the results of their involvement and continual silence around the most pressing problems affecting Guyana today. This country continues to exist as a corrupt nation led by the current administration from what citizens have seen over the past few months since the PPP took office in August. We have seen protests erupt after the brutal murder of three teenage boys, the firing of many Afro-Guyanese from various ministries, and the several APNU+AFC members’ arrests. 

Did the U.S. Ambassador and those speaking out about democracy comment on the injustice facing many citizens? I don’t think so, but soon, the Guyanese people will understand the details of their involvement and how their lives will change significantly.
