Parents And Students Outraged Over CXC and CAPE Results…Demands Full Review

Over 11000 students signed a petition on change.org website ‘demanding a review of the July 2020 Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) and the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Exam (CAPE) results. The examination council released the results on September 22, 2020.

Students across the region were eager to get their results by 5:00 p.m. during the afternoon but had to wait until 8:00 p.m. that evening. After releasing the results, parents and students used social media to voice their dissatisfaction over the grades, specifying multiple discrepancies. An online petition was signed to ensure a complete review of the grades.

Guyanese students expressing dissatisfaction with the grades received from the Business department signed another petition. These students are demanding a ‘Remarking and revaluating of CSEC Grades’ or reevaluating the marks.’ This petition is seeking 500 signatures.

“The grades awarded are completely unacceptable, and we demand our correct grades to be assigned. The school-based assessment would have carried a minimum of 20% of the final grade and the paper 1 of 30% we demand to know where the remaining 50% were tested from and how we achieved those grades.”

Antonio Alex Ramcharran, the narrator, is questioning the validity of the grades since they were only allowed to complete Paper 1 and not Paper 2 of the examination due to COVID-19.

A statement on the CXC Facebook page indicates the instructions for students with queries.

“If candidates have questions regarding their results, CXC® has a long-established process in place for addressing these concerns. Candidates, who have questions about an absent or ungraded result, can submit a Query. If there is a question about a grade and the candidate wishes to have a script re-examined, they may submit a request for a Review.”

The controversy over the results is yet to be officially addressed by the CSEC Board.
