The High Commissioner of Canada, Lilian Chatterjee finally met with Guyana’s foreign minister Hugh Todd, to discuss Canada’s commitment to Guyana. After the election where Chatterjee was an active voice towards democracy, requesting that the former president Brigadier David Granger accept defeat, the commissioner finally communicated with the current administration on October 1, 2020.

According to a government website statement, the two officials discussed the recently launched ‘Canadian Chamber of Commerce Guyana’ as a result of the Canadian corporations that made preparations to search for oil offshore in the South American nation last year.

“In recognition of the growing Canadian presence in Guyana, I am pleased to announce tonight that we will be launching the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Guyana,” she said during Canada’s 152nd-anniversary celebration held at the Marriott Hotel in Georgetown last year.

Hugh Todd expressed gratitude for the support of Canada and reiterated that the country is one of Guyana’s leading partners. Diaspora engagement and governance were two of the highlights of the virtual meeting.

The two countries have continued to develop diplomatic relations since 1964.
