U.S. Secretary of States, Michael Pompeo to Visit Guyana – Gov’t of Guyana Tight-Lipped About Agenda

According to the letter sent from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Georgetown, Guyana, the U.S. Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo is expected to visit Guyana from September 17 – 18, 2020. The letter instructed the ministry to have a representative at a meeting to discuss the “establishment of mechanisms for the Secretary of Sate’s seamless entry and egress as well as security well-being while in Guyana.”

The Former President, David Granger, to protect or further destabilize relations between Guyana and Venezuela, declined this request.

Guyana has always had a history with Venezuela regarding the borders, and the U.S. interference can further reignite the conflict between the two neighbours.  No mention if a meeting will be held to discuss such. Still, according to observers, this will likely come up since Pompeo tweets suggested he intends to work with the two countries after the historic transition.

Nearly a month after the swearing-in of the new President in Guyana, Dr. Irfan Ali, on August 31, Michael Pompeo tweeted his congratulations,

“Democracy ultimately prevailed in Guyana. The United States stands ready to work with our Guyanese neighbors after this historic transition.”

The Guyana Human Rights Association (GHRA) sent a warning to the new administration, “to stay out of Venezuela politics.” Those comments came about since political commentators believe that the United States plans to use Guyana as a base to attack Venezuela.

Efforts were made to contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Guyana for comments, but those efforts serve futile.
