“Wear The PPP/C Colours or We Won’t Sent You To Olympics”, Ramson Jr. Forces Athletes To Wear Political Colours
Outrage sparks as the reigning Peoples Political Party Civic (PPP/C) took the time to further divide the country and politicise the athletes being sent to the Tokyo games. Our newsroom reach out to two of the athletes who voiced their concern for the uniform colors and were told by a government official “either wear the colors or don’t go to the Olympics”
The PPP government cited that “For those young Guyanese Olympians, this is the fulfilment of one of their lifelong dreams”, a determining factor in getting the athletes to wear the party colours.
Sports Minister Ramson Jr. replied to the outrage stating that Guyanese need to unite under the PPP colours.
“First, allow me to remind everyone that this is a time to celebrate the achievements of our young Guyanese who made it to the world stage to shine the spotlight on our beautiful country. For those young Guyanese Olympians, this is the fulfillment of one of their lifelong dreams.”
Many people rushed to social media in outrage after seeing images and videos of the Guyana contingent at the opening ceremony to criticize the outfit’s design, pointing out that a key colour of the national flag was noticeably absent.
Half of the Guyanese population view the athletes as Team PPP and not team Guyana, which defers from the full celebration of Guyanese in the Olympics.
