While Success Squatters Are Treated Like Refugees, Anil Nandlall Launches Criminal Investigation Into Coalition Land Transactions
November 2, 2020 – The Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlal, the Guyana Police, and the Special Organized Crime Unit (SOCU) to investigate the land transactions made under the APNU+AFC Government.
A press release from the Department of Information confirms that letters were sent to various agencies.
“The Government of Guyana hereby requests a criminal investigation to be conducted into the said transactions and for all consequential legal resources to be pursued including, the institution of criminal charges, where necessary,” the statement stated.
The Minister reiterated that the Government of Guyana is expected to take legal action against the APNU+AFC Government’s former officials, notably, the former Minister of Finance, Winston Jordan.
“It will be noted that except in one case, where 10 percent of the purchase price was paid, a mere fraction of the purchase price was paid but Title was vested by former Minister of Finance, Winston Jordan. It will be further noted that each of the Title that was vested was done so after the March 2 2020 National and Regional Elections, which the APNU+AFC Government lost and each of the agreement of sale was entered into after the APNU+AFC Government lost a No-Confidence Motion, moved against them in the National Assembly on the December 21 2018, and therefore, had no power to enter into agreements of sale or vest Titles, in relation thereto,” the press release stated.
Nandlall classified the land transactions as “criminal” and planned to retrieve the lands at the Wales Estate, Ogle, and Peter’s Hall. The statement states that no legal course of action was taken for land distribution based on a review done by the Auditor General.
